Cliff Crutchfield had a strong interest in digital sensors, photography in general, panoramic photography specifically and web based navigable panoramic photography.

 

The web based, navigable part made it possible, in 1996, to view a space remotely in a way that had not been seen before. Cylindrical photographs could be shown in digital form.
